Residency visa question

I have a very specific question. Have you, or anyone you know, had any experience with what happens when (for whatever reason) you have had to stay OUTSIDE of Ecuador longer than the 90 days allowed by law in the first 2 years of your residency?

I know, there are some people who believe and/or say that you simply cannot stay out of the country more than 90 days at any one time. But that is simply not true. If one reads the law itself in spanish there is simply no way it can be interpreted that way. I also sat accross the table from the new General Director of the "Extranjería" and she personally told me that if one is outside the country for more than a TOTAL of 90 days in either of the first 2 years you are subject to having your residency visa nullified.

But we all know there is often a difference between the law or the theory and reality, what really happens. Is there anyone out there who has (had) a residency visa, and was outside of Ecuador for more than 90 days in either or both of the first years?
