electricity and heat

My husband and I are planning a move to Ecuador later this year. We are thinking to Cuenca, what is the electricity like, in other words, do we have to think about how many things are turned on at one time, or not? Also it sounds like the homes are cold at night, do the fireplaces keep it warm and is wood readily available for a fire? Also a friend has told me that the 6 month visa cannot be renewed easily, she told me we can ONLY be in Ecuador 6 months out of every 12, is this correct? Thanks so much to anyone who can help! Sue
