Travel from Cuenca to Salinas

Hello-

When we get to Ecuador, we plan on using Cuenca as our base. I would like to see Salinas. Is the new airport open yet? What is the best way to travel between Cuenca and Salinas at this point? If flying, what airport would we fly into from Cuenca, and how far is that airport to Salinas? I've been trying to find out this info online, but having a difficult time. I hope someone can help.
