Freedom of Expression Ecuador

In the last week there have been at least three people in Ecuador arrested for making statements against the President of Ecuador. These arrests have been talked about in the papers. Today, the OAS provided a special press release and report about freedom of expression in Ecuador - I thought some of you migt gain some benefit from it and get a good perspective on the insult and defamation laws.

RAPPORTEUR FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION EXPRESSES CONCERN REGARDING THE EXISTENCE AND APPLICATION OF CRIMINAL DEFAMATION LAWS AGAINST PERSONS WHO HAVE CRITICIZED PUBLIC OFFICIALS IN ECUADOR.

I think they do a good job of explaining the situation in Ecuador and their beliefs about some of the issues. There is also pertinent information from the opinions of the Inter-American Court.
