Pet Travel

My husband and I are moving from Houston to Ecuador in September with 1 parrot and 2 dogs (55 lbs each- the dogs, not the parrot). Continental is the only non-stop flight and it arrives at night after customs is closed. I was told that the dogs would have to stay in the cargo bay until customs opened in the morning.
First, is there a problem flying the dogs during September?
Second, is there any way of getting the dogs when I arrive?
Third, does anyone know if an ocean liner (cargo ship that takes travelers) is a possible means of traveling to Ecuador with our pets?
Thanks!
