Ordering from out of country

Just by reading things here and there, I am of the impression that if you order something into Ecuador, from say Canada or the US, that it is very hard to have it come to you without exorbitant surcharges, like taxes and duty at customs, and brokerage fees....is this right?
As an example, if I were to order an item from Ebay, or filters for my water machine, would it really be that bad? Or say I had someone send down to me a box of clothes after I arrived in Ecuador, would it be even worth it?
I heard that even sending donated items into Ecuador would be taxed?
I am just trying to figure out how to get certain things into the country after I arrive, that I can't bring with me , or I find I require and can't find there.
Any ideas or knowhow, would be appreciated.Thank you all...
Blessings
