Exploratory Visit

People are coming to Ecuador and people are leaving Ecuador. It is really important that your first visit to Ecuador not be when you come bag and baggage, family and all.

Anybody who is planning on coming here to live, sight unseen, should not do this. More people are leaving than we hear about, although I have heard of a few in Cotacachi also. The Culture Shock factor here could be very traumatic for a family, esp. with young kids. Just the language barrier alone can make life very difficult for some.

Investigate well before you relocate your whole life. I always recommend coming here for at least a month first time...

Ecuador simply is not that cheap anymore, so if this is the only reason, saving a few dollars, you are wasting your time. If you have a sense of adventure and are 'young' enough to be able to relish it, and can deal with the 'ecuatrocities'--then by all means come--for an exploratory.

Although it is sad to see someone have to relocate and leave Ecuador, there are things to be bought as many are selling their things here (2 on the other forum), rather than shipping them back again. Some things might be a bargain and some other things might be best purchased new.
