Atacames

The port town and province of Esmeraldas are on the NW coast of Ecuador. Just down the coast from it is Atacames, ia beach resort town that caters mostly to Ecuadorians and Columbians during holidays. Inflation has reduced North American tourism there although it remains affordable relative to a lot of beach resorts. Other than the beach, hotels, bars and restaurants it has little to offer.

Atacames,Tonsupa, and Same have numerous condominiums available for rent or purchase. Many are used as vacation homes.

Atacames, even though it is North of the Humbolt Current, is not as hot and humid as one would assume it would be so near to the Equator, unlike Panama. Some nights can get muggy enough to warrant fans or a.c.

The beach is good, with fine sand and a NNW exposure. The ocean water is somewhat turbid due to the sand bottom and effluent from local rivers. Visitors leave a lot of trash on the beach which is cleaned irregularly and mostly before holidays.

On the beach numerous outboard powered boats offer coastal and river tours, towed inflatable rides, and seasonal whale watching.

The winter swell breaks fast and close to the beach. Body boarders vastly outnumber surfers, partly due to the cost of equipment. A cross to on- shore wind develops just before noon and usually diminishes by sundown. An off-shore breeze develops during the night making the mornings comfortable and the surf hollow when there is a swell.
