Questions from a young family researching a move to Ecuador

Hi,

We are thinking of moving our young family (21 month old and 4 year old boys) to Ecuador.

We are planning on touring Ecuador before we make the big move but want to do some research so we can target some areas.

Any information on where the most family friendly areas of Ecuador are would be greatly appreciated. I'm leery of Quito...not sure I'm comfortable with an active volcano so close to the city.

We'd like to be close to the coast if possible but cost of living is also important. If we can get more for the money away from the coast we may delay our dream of being by the beach.

Things that are most important to us are:

-Safety since we have the 2 little ones (hence my hesitation about Quito)
-Good healthcare close by
-Low cost of living / at least a 3bdrm rental (house or apartment)

Other questions we have are regarding the actual move.

Should we ship our furniture and household items or would we be money ahead to travel light and rent a furnished apartment (or buy furniture there) and buy our household things once we get there?

More questions are emerging as we continue our research but answers to the above query would be really helpful to us.

Many thanks!!
