Taxi hi-jackings?

We are thinking of traveling to Guayquil and then Salinas soon. However, my husband read the US state dept's report about safety and is concerned about reports of taxi robberies and hi-jackings in and around Guayquil lately. I haven't read about this on any blogs or forums... anyone with objective advice would be appreciated!
