(SYC) Salinas Yacht Club Dock - Alert

Earlier this week a permit to construct was about to be granted. It was, at the last minute, TEMPORARILY, postponed due to a last minute flurry of calls, emails and meetings. The City Hall department chiefs, to their credit, have voiced their opposition. We got the Chamber of Commerce and a local business group to officially express opposition. Apparently not enough for complete denial.

If the dock is built those of you in Salinas that have property in the Alamar, Aquamira or nearby buildings will notice a drop in property values. This is the opinion of multiple agents who have been informed of the situation. Of greater importance is that it will further deteriorate the environmental damage already caused by the initial SYC construction. Collateral impacts will be reduced beachfront views on the ground, use of the structure in ways that are adverse to public safety and it will retard economic development.

So you read it here first and if you want to do something about it go to the Alcaldia (large building about a block after the Salinas Beach) and submit a letter at the ground floor window indicating your point of view. If opposed it could simply say: Opongo la construccion del Yacht Club en la Playa.

We have also lobbied members of the City Council.

If you want to do something it would have to be this coming week before close of business Wednesday.

Please bear in mind that (1) the dock is actually not a real need, rather something the Yacht Club would like to improve their view, (2) there are, in fact, other more economical and less damaging solutions and (3) if the Yacht Club wishes to invest funds it ought to go towards the remediation of the damage caused.

Note - the concept that environmental damage was caused by the artificial reef has been substantiated by third party studies involving the EC Navy and Universities.

So, fellow expats in Salinas, at this point it´s your call.
