My friendly Allied Van Lines broker faxed me an interesting document earlier today. What it says is that anyone wanting to export household or personal items must have a personal EIN (Employee Identification Number). As a former employer, I have had several EIN numbers for different companies I have owned, but this different. It is personal. The regulation went into effect beginning September 4, 2009. That's the bad news, the good news is the IRS has a website where you can apply online. The web link is:
http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102767,00.html
The punctuation marks after the /0,, are indeed commas not periods. Ditto for the mark before the ,00
The sheet I have has 15 steps to complete the form and a toll free number for the IRS: 800-829-4933.
If you send me an email, I will send the instructions I have. [email protected]
