Need to search topics

Dear Friends:
I have not found a way to search topics so as to avoid starting a new thread. Is there a way to easily do this?
For example, I saw a topic regarding a nice guest house in Guayaquil and posted something but the person didn't answer. I would like to find that one and send a personal message but can't find it without going through all of the messages.
I am sure I am not the only one with this problem.
