Censo Renewal

Hello,
My husband and I have applied for a Pension Visa, but in the meantime, our Censos have expired. We applied in Quito for both, and are now told we have to go to Manta or Cuenca to renew our censos? Can we just get a letter from our attorney stating that we have applied for a Pension Visa? It will cost us over $1000 to get these censos renewed (flights, hotel, atty fees etc) with no guarantee of how long they will be renewed. Has anyone else had this challenge, and is there another alternative? Thank you for any help.
