Aguaje Alert - High Tidal Wash this Weekend

13 years ago
For those of us who live on the coast -- especially right on the ocean -- tidal changes become quite noticeable; especially very high or very low tides. Usually seasonal with changes of the Humboldt current the strenght and level of the tides also alter (naturally) with the lunar cycle.

The strong higher tidal surges are called "aguajes" (washes) and one occurring this weekend.

To keep abreast of these changes you can access:

Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuador Navy (Instituto Oceanografico de la Armada del Ecuador) at:

http://www.inocar.mil.ec/news.php?C=6&S=1&idC=586

On the flip side, a high wash usually means a low tide -- and this morning was no exception -- so the dogs and I were out quite a way on the reef walking the flat rocks (and Gina dipping in every tide pool.) Some of our neighbors were out collecting sea snails for dinner and it was a delightful morning of strolling, chatting and wet sandy dogs.

.
{Note:This site is also where you can monitor tsunami activity In case anyone was aware and concerned seismic activity off the coast of Peru of 6.9 on the richter scale at 1:54pm local time has not generated any tsunami activity -- the situation is of course continually monitored}
