Business Opportunities

Hello all,

I have been reading this forum on and off for the past year. I have a couple general questions. First, let me say that I have read for many, many hours and days the different postings, however it seems that the search engine for this site doesn't exactly retrieve the desired results.

That being said, I am considering relocating to Ecuador in the next year or so with my wife and 2 children (14 yrs and 11 yrs).

I am 45 years old and seeking a new start. I don't have a retirement pension, nor do I collect a social security check.

I have cash,investments and property that can be liquidated to secure enough income to last for 10+ years based on the current average cost of living in EC. I would like to start a small business to supplement my cost of living.

Question #1: What type of visa should I seek to obtain in order to receive residency? Is it possible to get a residency visa without a pensioin?

#2: Are there small business opportunities still readily available for expats? I have a construction trade background as a General Building Contractor, but I am interested in turning a corner, to broaden my horizons so to speak.
Obviously, you all know what the building industry is doing here in the US. That is why I desire to make a change.

#3: How hard is it to get a drivers license once a person obtains residency?

#4: What region of the country has the most favorable climate? My family perfers the beach, I like the beach and the highlands. We would all like the weather to be less hot and humid, more sun than rain and less bugs. Does this exist?

I am planning a trip down within the next 4 to 8 weeks to do some scouting for business potential and for the areas to consider relocating to. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
