Just a quick share from a day in the life...
I guess Poochie decided he wanted to be an authentic pirate for Halloween becuase he started the day by getting a puncture wound inside his eyelid.
We go for a daily beach walk and there are a series of dogs who live at each of the local homes we pass who run over and bark and Poochie and Gina run up and do the doggy tail sniff nose touch thingie and run back down. Sometimes they ruff house -- nothing serious, doggy antics with tails up and general play acting. Today one of their three yellow lab mix friends must have caught a tooth under Poo's lid ...but it was about 20 minutes (the rest of the 1/4 mile walk up the beach, our usual spalsh into the tide pools, and a stop to play soccer with some kids on the beach) before i notices there was a drop of blood in the corner of Poo's eye -- then I saw another on the white soccer ball and called a halt to play and we went back ill to up the hill to the Hideaway.
Once there the bleeding became more profuse and it was time for serious action -- got out the rubber gloves, veterinary opthalmic antibacterial solution and gauze pads and started to lavage his eye (Poochie is a great patient and was uncomfortable but in no serious pain) -- it was apparent that this was more than a simple laceration so with another gauze pad saturated with solution on his eye and three more on top of that, wrapped with athletic paper tape (that does not adhere to hair but to itself) and a call to Dr, Franklin to let them kknow that Poochie and his nervous gringa mom were on their way in -- off we went.
Kudos and thanks to my guests Oscar & Sharon for coming along for the adventure and keeping both Poochie and me calm on the way into town -- I LOVE MY GUESTS! -- and they are dog folks so that helped.
We were in the exam room within 5 minutes and needed to sedate Poochie to get a good look at his eye -- so that was the first shot -- cleaned him up and took a look, and was quite a bit of poking til we found the hole (and identified the puncture as a tooth mark) -- it required stitching (with absorbable stitches) plus he got a shot of vitamins, and two different antibiotics (gram positive and gram negative) and was under observation the rest of the afternoon.
Total cost: $15
Great care, considerate and gentle and professional. Allowed me to hang out with Poochie as he slept off the sedative.
We are home now and Poochie has been awake but is still sleeping off the last of the sedative in the comfort of the back seat of his jeep -- doors open and he can come out whenever he is ready --.
Just wanted to share the story, and the cost of vet care here. Being able to get my dogs to the vet in the case of this type of emergency is exactly why I purchased my little second hand car -- and basically what I would have paid for the same vet treatment back in the states would be about 20% of the cost of the vehicle so i feel I am getting my money's worth.
And oh yes -- NO trick or treating for Poochie tonight -- that son-of-a-
b!tch is SO GROUNDED!!!
A pireate indeed! Next year I'm gonna make him dress up as Barney just to get back at putting his poor mama through today!
