I just spent about 30 minutes on the telephone with a supervisor from American Airlines who deals with pets. The following information is current:
1. American Airlines does not accept any pets except cats or dogs.If you want to transport a bird, you need to find another airline.
2. The "10 day rule" which people think means they have ten days to travel form the date they get their health certificate is only travel inside the US, not international. Furthermore, It is an airline rule not an Ecuadorian government rule.
3. Ecuador requires the required certificate issued within 60 days of the date of arrival.
4. If you are checking your dogs or cats as baggage, you can put two pets in the same kennel as long as the total weight does not exceed 100 lbs. That fact alone will save you $175.00.
5. If you are carrying your pets in the cabin, you can also put two animals in the same carry on, so long as it meets the airline size restrictions of 19" long, 13" wide, 9" high. And most important the pets must be the same breed. The cabin pet charge is $125.00.
6. For carrying your pet on board, a reservation is required because only 7 pets per flight are allowed. The pet carry on counts as your one carry on.
7. Checked pets do not need a reservation and the checked pet does NOT count as your free checked bag
8. Collapsible kennels, which can be folded down flat are not acceptable for checked pets, due the risk of collapse during flight.
9. Separate food and water dishes must be securely attached in inside the kennel. A bag of food sufficient for 24 hours must be attached to the outside of the kennel.
I only checked American Airlines.
