Conflicting opinions regarding Gated vs Non Gated

We are looking into the area of Cotacachi for our future home. We will not be buying, but renting. I have read numerous opinions from those that have lived in the area for many years that it is wise to live in a Gated Community.

Just the thought of it makes me extremely uncomfortable. My thoughts go to the locals and how it must appear to them that the "Rich Gringo" wants to lock themselves away from everyone but ...."Their Own Kind"

I understand there is crime/theft and break-ins and have read that if you don't live in a secure gated area, you must have someone at your home at all times.

I hear stories about security guards tipping off their friends of what they see might be of value and the opportunity presents itself.

My intention is NOT to lump the locals....including gringos, into one box. I am just very confused as to why it is so highly recommended to live in a gated community.

We want to avoid being a target as much as possible and to just try and fit in the best way we can.

Is one a bigger target if you live in town, outside of town in a house, or in a gated community?
