Newbies looking for helpful info

I am a 60 year old military retiree living in Wisconsin with my 60 year young significant other. We are seriously looking at a move to Latin America with Ecuador currently our first choice and Panama or Costa Rica as secondary choices. We are looking at late 2012 or very early 2013 to do this. While not wanting to become a pain in the southern exposure for anyone we would love whatever information we can obtain from generous expats willing to share with us.

My first and I suppose most important question to get started is this. I have a military retirement in the neighborhood of $1500 per month. My significant other has no retirement income at all. From what I have read on the internet thusfar this appears like it could be a serious issue getting her a visa to live in Ecuador. Am I correct? Can anyone offer a suggestion?
