Ecuador convicts man in US double murder

CUENCA, Ecuador (AP) — An Ecuadorean man was convicted of premeditated murder on Monday in last year's bludgeoning killings in Massachusetts of a woman and her toddler son in a case that upset U.S. prosecutors because Ecuador insisted on trying the man in his homeland.

He likely would have faced a far stiffer penalty in the United States.

Under Ecuadorean law, the three-judge court that convicted Luis Guaman can sentence him to between 16 and 25 years in prison for the February 2011 murder in Brockton, Massachusetts, of Maria Palaguachi, 25, and her 2-year-old son, Brian Caguana.

I found it strange that the prosecutor in Massachusetts REFUSED to assist with providing evidence and then goes on to complain that the procedure in Ecuador was a "scam" because it did not have *his* evidence.

Evidently even without the assistance of the Mass. Prosecutor who begrudged Ecuador its own constitutional due process and non extradition clauses -- the man was found guilty and will be sentenced.

Personally, I think the Mass. prosecutor should learn to put on his "big boy under pants" and perhaps take some time to travel about the world to perhaps learn to understand that the USA is not the only bastion of due process under the law -- and perhaps also learn that withholding evidence because his feelings have been hurt has no place in the morality of the practice of law.... Yes even attorneys have ehtical standards and it is my opinion this putz needs to relearn a few!
