My family went for vacinations today

We took a trip to the doctor for yellow fever, flue shots, malaria pills, typhoid, hep a, etc, shots today. Was not a cheap trip to the doctor. It cost a little over 1k for the 4 of us. I choose to self insure my family. At my level of wealth, it makes the most sense fiscally. It's easier for me to set aside and invest 5k a month towards "Insurance" and keep the money if I don't spend it, than it is for me to pay for insurance premiums I may see no return on.

I met a very interesting Doctor while there. He asked why I was travelling to Ecuador, and I told him the truth. To find an affordable to live in country, with a climate I like, to escape American taxation. He was very much left leaning, but never pushed his views on me and I am clearly right leaning and never tried to sell my views to him. We had an honest conversation. It was a breath of fresh air. It was honestly the first time in my life I have dealt with a person of differing political views, who was able to remain civil, and bring up counter points in an adult fashion. Not just simply say "You must listen to faux news".

Even after I left the exam room, he approached me in the hallway and wanted to know more. The doctor was clearly near the age of retirement, and has had friends who donated time in quito. I think he is likely considering a "working retirement" there. He was clearly a Doctor who does it because he wants to help people, not because of a high salary.

In my area, the doctors that can give you a yellow card for yellow fever immunisation are also the doctors that treat HIV patients - not exactly a sexy or lucrative line of work.
