Looks like El Nino will be here in early 2013

12 years ago
For those of us who have decided that the world will continue after the Mayan calendar ends in December of this year it's time to plan for: El Nino.

I've heard this from my fishermen here at the puerto, have heard it around the government center (CAC) and my guardiano and his family are starting plans for what needs to be done to prepare our buildings and cistern here to handle no electric and no city water.

Of course the icing on the cake was receiving a message that pretty much repeats all I've heard from our good friend crowdpub (Nicholas Crowder) who wrote this;

There is some indication from several sources that early 2013 may be a hard "El Nino" season. We will see how well all those new roads hold up. Anyone on the coast needs to take special heed and have your plan B in place. Here is a link to patterns of El Nino back to the 1960's. I have been or lived through two major ones beginning in 1983. From looking at the chart attached I think there is some possibility of a major hit in early 2013. You will see the graph in the lower half of the document. Depending where you are on the coast as the time comes closer and if it looks like it is the real deal, I would make sure you stock up on basic supplies - especially water. In 83 much of the coast was cut off. Of course there have been improvements in much of the road structure but there has also been reports of the quality of asphalt being used. I would begin to follow as many news reports as possible on El Nino. http://meteora.ucsd.edu/~pierce/elnino/history.html

For folks who were here this past rainy season, it was much wetter than the five years preceding it and that effected a lot of the coast including an increase in dengue fever, an effect on the sewer system in Salinas, mudslides up the coast, and some issues with the new asphalting that has been spread on the coastal roads and secondary roads.

An El Nino will make this past year look like a spring drizzle.

So keep an eye on the weather, don't wait til the last minute to get supplies you might need. Check that you can exit your building if the electric goes out -- and you are stuck in an elevator. And wear your galoshes.

Stay safe everyone,

Susan
