Visiting Cuenca early September...

Trying to figure out the various things I will need to do. Will list those off the top of my head:

1) Have US passport. Do I need a tourist visa, and if so, how do I get one?

2) Plan to learn about Cuenca in large part by riding the bus routes around town. Where do I find maps of the routes, is there a central terminal where I should start?

3) Flying into Quito in the night, plan to fly to Cuenca following AM. Recommendations on hotel near the airport for easy access, decent rest?

4) Plan to bring cash in 20s and 10s, as well as an ATM card and a couple major credit cards.

5) Staying at Hostel el Monasterio, which seems to be central.

6) Planning to retire in Cuenca in the next few years, although not looking at real estate specifically this time.

7) Plan to visit Coopera and the major universities. Any recommendations on other major attractions or places where I could learn more about Cuenca (perhaps expat hangouts since I speak only English well) would be welcome.

8) Is there an advantage to buying my tickets between Quito and Cuenca in advance? I can imagine some potential disadvantages to doing so (change of plans, delayed flight, etc.) Should I buy them at the airport?

9) Recommendation for a good map of Cuenca, perhaps available online, that I could print out and carry around?
