Uvillas ~ Ecuador fruit with many benefits

I was recently introduced to this tart little fruit, similar in taste to a fresh ripe cranberry. Very delicate in consitution it is one of the fruits only just entering the exotic fruit market. Now farmed in South Africa and Australia/New Zealand/new South Wales and India and China, it originated here in the Andes mountains.

Besides a similar taste to a cranberry it appears it has the same pro-active effect for those with UTI and kidney albumin issues -- protective and treatment wise.

In addition it has been found to be an anit-inflamatory, anti-hemotoma, shown possible antidiabetes and antihypertension properties in vitro, as well as anti-cancer possibilities as a cytotoxin, antihepatoxic (toxic build up in the liver), and melatonin has been found in the plant which evidence, mainly from animal models, suggests may help to prevent or cure diseases associated with oxidative stress, including neurodegenerative diseases, which frequently occur during aging.

Physalis peruviana is closely related to the tomatillo, a fellow member of the genus Physalis. It is not closely related to any of the cherry, Ribes gooseberry, Indian gooseberry, or Chinese gooseberry, as its various names might suggest.

The fruit is a smooth berry, resembling a miniature spherical yellow tomato. Removed from its bladder-like calyx, it is about the size of a marble, about 1–2 cm in diameter. Like a tomato, it contains numerous small seeds. It is bright yellow to orange in color, and it is sweet when ripe, with a characteristic, mildly tart flavor, making it ideal for snacks, pies or jams. It is popular in salads and fruit salads, sometimes combined with avocado.

Good and healthy snacking and another treasure for those of us here.
