looking at property and/or houses

If we want to look at homes or property for sale in ecuador, what is the best way to go about that. Is it better to hire a realtor, or someone local that knows the area and the locals. We will be vacationing in Nov. for vacation but also to see if this is where we want to relocate/retire. Does anyone havej suggestions and might know someone to contact (email, ph. #, etc.) to ask questions. I know Ecuador does not have an MLS system like US does. My husband and I live in Montana right now, but are looking for a change (big change). Please help with any words of wisdom.
