I am a yankee through the through and I never used to eat grits. I remember once driving through the Carolinas and stopping at a local eatery for breakfast. I order eggs, county sausage and biscuits. My meal came with what I ordered plus grits. When I went to pay the bill I questioned the amount because I had not ordered grits. The waitress/cashier said" aw shucks we don't charge for em". I decided then and there if they don't charge for em, I ain't eatin em.

That was until I saw a show where Emeril was cooking shrimp and grits and then later Bobby Flay had a cook off with an old grizzled southern cook where they also cooked shrimp and grits. I have the recipe and have made them many times.

Anyway someone asked recently if grits were available in Ecuador, Not exactly, There is an item called hominy in grocery stores that seems to resemble grits, but I haven't tried them. I brought a 5lb bag of stone ground grits in one of my 16 suitcases. There is also a wide variety of corn meal which is called Harina de Maize. It can be used to coat fish before frying and also to make polenta for those New Yorkers.
