Luggage questions, what to buy, where to get it.

The following question gets asked again and again, I am guessing by people who don't travel much. "How big a suitcase can I check in with airlines?" The answer is very simple; buy biggest suitcases you can find. Luggage manufacturers do NOT make luggage too large to be checked as baggage with airlines. If they did, NO ONE would buy them.

Where to buy it. Perhaps the best source for used luggage is Salvation Army, Goodwill or St Vincent de Paul. You can find almost new bags for a fraction of their original cost. If you think you need matched designer luggage, don't come to Ecuador, you will get laughed at.

I moved to Cuenca in 3 trips with a total of 18 suitcases and two dogs. Two of the suitcases were hard sided with 4 casters each--which I highly recommend. The others were an assortment of suitcases and duffels that can be put into larger suitcases for return trips. On my last trip, I brought 6 suitcases, one computer in its original and one new printer in its box.
