My wife and I are considering retirement to Ecuador in the next few months. Of course, we will have to take the trip from Canada and spend maybe a month down there travelling around to see what it is like. We have been many times to Mexico, to the Dominican Republic and other areas and we imagine it is pretty similar in most respects apart from the property ownership side. We are considering the coast, Salinas, Ballenita or maybe a community south or north of Manta but I have also read some great reviews on Cuenca and other areas including the city of Quito, the capital. I was told that the coastal areas are not that humid but they are overcast most of the year and I wondered if anyone could confirm that or not. Being the Broker and Owner of my own Real Estate Company, I am of course particularly interested in the price differentials between inland and the coast. Obviously, I don't want to pay the earth for a property but I do want a nice spacious place maybe 2500 sq.ft. with enough bedrooms and bathrooms for family to come and visit. We have purchased the Lonely Planet Ecuador the the Galapagos Islands which we have started reading . Having no MLS down there it is hard to get an idea of prices. I am wondering what one gets for between $100,000 and $200,000. I have read many blogs where it seems that the Salinas area has sky-rocketing prices much like those in North America which would be not the way we would want to start out. On the other hand, once we master the Rosetta Stone South American Spanish Course, I am wondering if those of you who have moved down already, would recommend renting for a few months so as to find our feet and see the lie of the ground. Any advice from Ex Pats who have made the same sort of decisions we will have to make and who would have no interest in selling me a property but just providing some assistance would be greatly appreciated. I am talking to a lady in Salinas who was a realtor in the USA and who now lives down there and sells property, but it would be nice to get the other side of the story and as we always know, there's always another side.
