Quito Mariscal Sucre Int'l Airport opens Feb 20 9:00 am

The new Mariscal Sucre International Airport opens at 9am today. 129 flights are scheduled to take off and land on the first day.

The municipality of Quito said there are orders for permits to build hotels in Tababela (location of new airport), Puembo and Tumbaco.

One of the top priorities is to promote tourism in the area. That's why there's a push to offer more direct flights to Quito. Aeromexico will begin non-stop flights from Quito to Mexico City later this year. American Airlines is seeking permission to fly direct from New York. LAN wants direct flights from Buenos Aires and Santiago, Iberia from Madrid, and KLM from Amsterdam. There are also plans for direct flights from Los Angeles and Chicago.

Many have expressed concerns about the distance from the airport to the city center. Officials believe this is not a huge issue with foreign tourists because many airports are now far from the inner cities, for security and more space.

Later this year, more than a thousand people will attend the Latin American Travel Mart in Quito. This is a tourism business fair. The city is hoping that when the people attending this event arrive at the airport, they will see that Quito is not just a colonial town, but has taken a leap into the modern world.

A look at what you can expect to see at the new airport:
