Felony and Visa Aplication

Does anybody have any information regarding how a felony conviction effects the visa process.
Before I signed my contract for my visa application with Nora and Patrick Minga, I showed them my criminal background ( which was dated over 2 months before I signed a contract with the Mingas), my passport, birth certificate.
I was informed that it would not be a problem, and I would get a visa within 8-12 weeks.
Several weeks later, I was informed that my background would be more difficult and I would have to pay additional money , to cover the extra work.
I refused to pay extra , because i had given the background check before the contract was signed with the Mingas.
Nora and Patrick told me that I would never receive a visa in Ecuador and I will not receive a refund either.
Since then , I have spoken to several attorneys, and went to the immigration office in Ecuador. They all reviewed my back ground check and told me that normally Ecuador believes that the punishment I received for the felony is sufficient and they do not look at the past. (Depending on the class of felony and the time which has passed).
During my search on felonies and visa applications, I came across a big surprise,, the person who refused to process my application, Nora Minga, also had an arrest. Is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
I have found a honest person to help me and I have recently recieved my visa, without any problems
