Who will we meet in Ecuador

I hope this email does not offend anyone. I am arriving next wednesday in Ecuador heading to Cuenca with my wife and hoping to finalize our permanent residents visas having never been there before.

I wondered in a fleeting moment this afternoon, what type of Ex Pats I am going to meet in Ecuador - not that it matters in the big picture. It was just a thought.

The thought crossed my mind as my wife and I were taking a drive through La Jolla, CA while celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in San Diego.

As we drove through down by the ocean, I noticed places worth in the tens of millions of dollars (As posted in the magazines down here) and I thought to myself.........don't tell me there's no money in the USA or that all Americans are running south because they can't make ends meet. I did not see that. In fact, I saw oodles of money and wealth. (I am a Canadian so I am not all together up on the US economy. I would not know).

I got to thinking that I wonder if International Living has over-stated the benefits of living abroad in not just Ecuador but in hundreds of other parts of the world. Am I having second thoughts. No, not for one minute.

Being a well traveled person, I know what it takes to make ends meet in foreign countries. Yes, their stories sound plausible but you never know, and because you guys are already there, you would know better than anyone else.

I don't believe that a large percentage of people there are living on a shoestring - in survival mode - unable to visit other places and are fully dependant on their SS payments.

The only reason i mention that is that I have seen many posts on this forum that seem to meet that criterion, i.e. they are coming because its the only way they can get by.

I would hate to think that lots of people that are there, are only there because (for their sakes) is that their SS cheque is just enough to cover their needs. As I said right up front, I don't want to offend anyone by posting this, and I welcome anyone's feedback and please, this is only a question I had, it's not what I believe but I thought I would ask anyway. No offence meant. Please put me right on this if you have something to contribute. I am eager to learn.
