first visit/looking for land/planning vacation

my husband and I are planning out first visit to Ecuador in January! (he is US I am Canadian) we plan to travel for 2-3 months and our dream is to buy some land in the near future and build a small farm. firstly we would like to travel the coast and enjoy a much needed vacation for a month and leave the next few open for learning more about a location we would like to settle in. in the mean time we would like to do as much research as possible while we're still in Canada. my husband loves to surf and we're more on the low key end of life. I guess my question is, suggestions of places to visit/avoid, good places for building/land, and maybe some cheap hostels, vacation spots!!! thanks in advance :)
