Returning to Ecuador

A couple of points of interest for folks returning to Ecuador. I left Portland Maine on Thursday 31 October early morning and arrived Quito late that night. American all the way.

No snags. First time I have entered with a Cedula. The fastest customs transit I have ever experienced. The guys were conversing with themselves by the X-Ray machine and practically ignored me....opened nothing. I scurried out like a mouse, happy to not be noticed.

I stayed at the Quito Hotel Suits, as recomended to me by someone on this forum...Susan maybe. Don's taxi guy showed up with a sign to greet me. Short drive to the hostel. It was fine.

Made my own breakfast the next morning. The window is 7am to 9am and I woke at 8:30. Don't tell Don I used five eges in my omelet. at $40 a nigh he might survive. The taxi is $8 each way.

But !, at the Airport when I tried to buy a seat south that morning I found they were all booked. Seems my impeccable timing had landed me a day ahead of possibly the biggest travel weekend in Ecuador. The Cuenca Festival and the Day of the Dead. So no fly.

I took a bus from the airport to the Terminal Sur for $2. I was glad to discover that the $25 taxi I had heard about was not the only way to go. From there I bit the bullet and rode the bus from Quito south to Ambato, stayed overnight, then another bus to Cuenca. The bus was an express to Cuenca. Which seemed to mean simply that the Cuenca luggage was locked up all the way there...nice feature.

Eventually everyone does that long ride. I think I should have split the trip at RioBamba.

good luck
