Halfway to Heaven - An Ecuador Postcard

Eddie left Salinas for eternity saturday evening.

Before moving to Ecuador, he felt alone and without resources in the United States. When the doctors informed him his days were numbered, he made a bold choice.

He moved to the resort city of Salinas where he told his friends he spent the happiest nine months of his life.

Here he was known for his humor and quickly made many friends. About 100 people turned out to remember him Sunday evening -- far more than he probably new back home.

The expats all pitched in to pay for his funeral and burial costs -- more than what was needed was received.

As a new resident of Salinas, I was proud to see my community show character, compassion and generosity for a man who had once felt so alone.

This told me a lot about life as an expat here in Salinas. The people here showed that they are good people.

Eddie decided he did not want to die alone and broke where he had lived most of his life, so he made the bold decision to move halfway to heaven for the nine months before he died.
