any expat friendly areas within an hour from Cuenca??

Hi,
New to this forum and I'm an expat from US now living in Chiang Mai Thailand, which is similar to Cuenca in that it is a popular and affordable retirement destination.

I am currently investigating the possibility of at least visiting Cuenca EQ with the idea of moving away from the heat of northern Thailand and would like some feedback. I got a hundred questions, but I'll only start with one.

Being a 'fringeguy', I prefer living near, but not in an urban area.
a half hr to an hour from a decent sized city with some elevation to cool it off would be ideal for me, so does anyone know of any expat friendly places near Cuenca that meet my criteria??
Preferably a fixer upper house and lot with some nature around it and neighbors that are not too close, but are there if you need them.
