Vacationing in Equador with the Intent to Relocate

My partner (gay) would like to vacation there and explore options about living there in the future. We heard Quinto has some gay life that we would like to explore and other places that have some gay culture. Its something we are not who we are but it adds some comfort knowing there might be others, however, we generally fit in anywhere. If we did settle there it maybe the city but I prefer the ocean. It would be nice to know where ex pats are and perhaps to make acquaintences to learn the ins and outs as we don't speak Spanish. We would like to explore places we like to live and learn from those what the real costs are. Knowing I prefer the ocean, and to see some of the beauty of the county also meet expats, where do you suggest we visit and what's the best way to make reasonable travel arrangements.
