What other countries did you look into?

I am curious as to what other countries some of you looked into (not just read about but visited) before choosing Ecuador?

As for us, we were heavily researching Dominican Republic. We took several trips there then our final trip where we searched for a house (and boat) to buy was something out of a movie complete with a boat that was the so called owners tried to sell us that ended up was not even theirs and it was a "drug" boat that was confiscated from the original owners due to debts. Oh, and we were also detained by the police at the military headquarters so they could try to extort $10,000 from us but to no avail. My husband was well connected and got us out of that in 5 hours.

Due to the experience we decided that DR was definitely not for us as they are extremely corrupt and with the exception of Punta Cana and the capital it is very poor and in some parts compared to a third world country so many are desperate thus extreme corruption.
