Warning: Airline Tickets to EC and Visas

Thought I'd throw out something I learned at the airport as I was trying to check in for my flight to Ecuador. I originally purchased online a round trip ticket with a return date to the U.S. for mid-March 2015. I planned to go back and pack up another 7 suitcases of stuff to bring back to EC. As I was trying to check my baggage for my flight, the clerk at the desk asked for my Visa. I explained that I was going to get my Pensionado Visa in Quito. She patiently explained that I could not board a flight to EC with a 6 month return, it had to be 90 days or less, the length of time one has on the Tourist Visa stamp in your passport. In all my nearly 3 years of research and asking every possible kind of question I could think of, never did the subject come up that you could not enter EC with a pre-paid ticket for longer than 90 days out! So, in order to actually check my luggage and board my flight, I had to have the ticket agent change my departure date from EC to the week before Christmas and it cost me an extra $300!!! Not sure if the extra $$$ was because of the date of return flight being so close to Christmas, or just for changing the date. At least I made it to Ecuador! And once I get my Cedula, I can change my ticket back to March of 2015. So, all y'all ready to take flight, save yourself some $$$ and make sure your return flight is dated no more than 90 days from your arrival date in EC.
