Physical considerations

As my hubby and I have delved more deeply into the possibility of moving to Ecuador we are faced with a serious consideration. In July 2013, the vehicle I was driving was struck by a DUI driver and I was left with a severely fractured back. I have approx. one year left before I am as recovered as I'm going to get. I am able to walk and drive now but I do have significant chronic pain issues. (And to think- just 9 months earlier we had been traipsing around Icelandic volcanoes and such.) The concerns are: Will access to substantial pain medication be an issue? Are the roads and transportation exceedingly rough? Are there places to rest along pathways or in lines? Since Cotacachi is so small is it more advisable to settle in Ibarra or Cuenca? We desire picturesque surroundings and an eventual sense of integration. Right now, our opinion of cities and their dwellers is less than stellar so the thought of having to live in city-like conditions is largely a bummer. Are there any expats out there who also have physical limitations? If so, can you address our concerns? Thank you so much for time and advice! -Sandra
