Living with the locals - when death visits

This weekend we had an experience no one should ever have, the death of a son.

Early Saturday morning, Jose Antonio was killed while traveling on the roads near Atahualpa when his motorcycle was struck head on by a vehicle coming wide around a curve. The vehicle left the scene. He was 33.

The past three days have been the site of a tragedy for the family who lives and works with me. Jose was the chief bread winner for his father and mother as his father is retired with a heart ailment contracted after a chemical explosion at a shrimp lab 18 years ago and he is no longer able to do physical labor (he is a pastor with his church). His mother cares for his two younger sisters, one of who is developmentally disabled and the other who just turned 18. JUan Carlos and his second brother are both married. Christian works at the local shrimp lab as the site gardern (which was also his brother{s job) and he has a wife and a child 7 and a another 2. Juan Carlos works with me as my partner and has one daughter 4 (who starts school next Monday) and we are expecting his second child in September.

No one expects sudden death...

The past three days have been... an amazing look into the hearts and souls of my family and my community into the outpouring of love, strenght and tenacity. It has ben real, it has been raw, it has been terrifying, and it has been sad beyond sadness.

My pride in the young man who has become like a son to me is beyond anything I can describe ---he has been called on to step up to be the man of the family and he has done so.

I state that here with conviction for all to read and know.

I will add to this thread over the next few days with what took place --- may we all leave this world surrounded by as much love and dignity, true dignity, and freindship.

Jose Antonio...may his name be for a blessing and his name remembered always ..RIP brother, sone, dear friend
