Traveling Around Ecuador

From my initial post, one concern I have is about traveling around Ecuador.

Again, let me just say, I'm ignorant of how things work in Ecuador. I've been reading about all the good things: the Andes, the Galapagos Islands, the Pacific ocean breezes, the low cost of living, the warm hearted people, the organic produce year around, the nice temperatures in the highlands etc...

What had not occurred to me is the driving challenges. The wife and are adventurous. We had planned on, wherever we moved to, on owning a ruggedly outfitted jeep wrangler to equip and load up with camping/adventure gear for 1 or 2 week long expeditions into the Andes, Amazon, Pacific coast etc...

But from what I'm reading so far, that's not a good idea because of the rules, crime etc..

Our idea of a fun week would be to say, stay at home on the weekend to be with friends, visit local eateries, shop at the markets etc.. Then during the week when everyone is working, taking a 3 or 4 day trek to a new destination to explore the beauty of the country.

Doable? Or is taking public transportation the way to do it? Seems cumbersome if you have to haul a bunch of gear around like camera's, backpacks, sleeping bags etc.. plus you can't haul a mountain bike or kayak with you.
