Train travel in Ecuador

Hoping for some feed back about using the train from Guayaquil up into the Andes.

A rough plan is to start at Guayaquil, head up to Aluesi (sp) and stay a nite or 2 in a hostal/hotel. Then either head north as far as Riobamba for a few days, then south. Or head out south directly and spend a few more days in Cuenca.

Take the bus back down from Cuenca or Riobamba to Guayaquil, stay there 1 night, for my return flight.

Comments, help and any other advice will be most welcome.

Not interested in the overpriced Tren Crucero. I did the Orient Express down to Italy years ago and nowadays I prefer travel light and integrate rather than posh.
