Roads from GYE to Cuenca

I live in Guayaquil and will move to Cuenca soon. I have only ever gone with a company that uses 16seater vans. Now I will have to take my little Chevy aveo to Cuenca. I am concerned, because 2 winters ago, a big landslide took out a big portion of the road, and the detour is so steep, that I don't think the little car will make it, even with only the driver and no luggage. Does anyone have alternative suggestions? I've heard that the road Machala - Cuenca is quite a bit easier. I am willing to drive extra miles.
