Coastal Business Harassment

In the increased media coverage after 3 political assassinations in Ecuador, I have seen, all of a sudden, many mentioning in their comments stories about coastal businesses being "shaken down" for "protection" by this new influx of criminals from elsewhere. As a 50-something seriously considering to relocating to Ecuador's coast and running a public-facing business of some kind, these references have jolted me.
If any coastal business owners, such as store=, restaurant- or hostel- owners, come across this post, I would be very appreciative of a boots-on-the-ground description of your experiences with this. Many of the discussion groups where I have seen this topic discussed are flooded by comments from highlanders saying it isn't happening there, making it difficult to get an idea of just how rampant this is in coastal towns. Though this is good news, I really do want to hear from business owners and involved coastal dwellers ONLY, please. Thank you.
