Rent don't buy a house!

For those who are considering moving to Vilcabamba, consider staying in Loja first for a few months in a rental and then rent in Vilcabamba to see what works best for you.

We lived in Loja and visited Vilcabamba but there was not much to see and the restaurants were limited and expensive by Ecuador standards. Vilcabamba is also at risk for higher crime and questionable or illegal activities.

Loja offers beautiful scenery and parks as well as the conveniences of larger grocery stores such as Supermaxi and Gran Aki. Loja also has organic fruits and vegetables in local markets and the Podocarpus National park as well as smaller towns that you can take a bus to for less than $10.

Vilcabamba is more dry, less green and hotter than Loja which has spring like daytime temps in the 60's to 70's year round.

We bought a beautiful townhome in Loja but now that we want to sell it there are not takers despite a reasonable price. Thinking back on this, we should have rented because we had to leave Loja due to health reasons.
