Moving to Cairo in August

My g/f and I have a teaching job in Cairo and we will be moving there in August. The school is providing us with LE1000 each per month as accomodation allowance. When we first learned this and translated it into English pounds, we obviously thought that accomodation must be very cheap in Cairo, given the small we were given to pay for a flat. However, since then, having looked on a few different 'real estate' websites (inc. e-dar.com), we have discovered that this is a paltry sum of money for us to be able to pay for a flat with! We have worked out that we will need at least double that, which of course is going to have to come out of our wage. We are a little annoyed with our future employers about this, but would like to ask anyone on here if they know any different to this. What I mean is that are those prices quoted on E-dar etc. inflated as a result of probably being aimed at ex-pats in the UK and US? Is it therefore possible to find cheaper accomodation elsewhere and if so, where?! The school has offered to help us find somewhere and maybe that will be cheaper than we have so far found, but we just thought we'd get an independent opinion on here first. Any help would be gratefully received, thanks, James and Hannah.
