How difficult was it to get resident status in egypt?

I am curious about people who were/are citizens of Canada and the US, how difficult was it for you to gain residency in Egypt? The tourist visa only lasts for 3 months, and I wish to stay for a few years at least. I fortunatly have my own business which I run online, so I wouldn't need to get a work visa.

Also, does anyone know if I would need s pecial permit if I will be working on my own business while in Egypt?
