guy moving to Alexandria (looking for tips, etc)

Moving in January to teach English in Alexandria. Trying to find out where a cool neighborhood (and cheap) is to look for apartments. I know Roushdy is where most expats are but I heard it's rather expensive. I want some character, charm, and history, not modern looking pieces of crap. I have heard of the Ottoman District a.k.a. Anfushi. Is this suitable for my taste? Also, if anyone is up for a drink i'm sure I'll need one !
