Extension of Tourist Visa in Cairo - Beware!

The following was submitted as an article to Expat Exchange. Have others had similar problems renewing tourist visas in Cairo?

BEWARE!

I went to the Passport and Immigration office, Mogamma, Cairo on Sunday 26th June, with the intention of getting an extension of my tourist/visitor's visa. A policeman there told me that they have been given instructions NOT to issue extension visas to any foreigners from now on. So they are refusing, and all foreigners without a valid visa will have to leave Egypt after the grace period of two weeks.
